
Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, stated in Parliament yesterday (07) that as soon as the problematic situation that arose in the Grade 6 English module was identified, steps were taken to halt its distribution, and that the module had not reached the students.
The Prime Minister stated that an investigation was launched immediately after the error was corrected, and emphasized that legal action would be taken against those responsible as soon as the investigation reports are received.
She stated that if any action has occurred outside the prescribed procedure, it will be investigated, along with identifying those responsible, and also requested that unnecessary fear not be created regarding the proposed education reforms based on this incident.
The Prime Minister said that the English textbook for Grade 6 children is scheduled to be provided on January 21st, and the English textbook for Grade 1 children on January 29th, and therefore requested parents and children not to harbor unnecessary fear regarding this matter.
She pointed out that the National Institute of Education is an institution established by a separate act, and therefore must operate in accordance with its rules and regulations, and that disciplinary powers rest with the National Education Commission. Therefore, decisions are made after discussions with the Commission, she added.
The Prime Minister stated that no one should have any doubts about the transparency of this investigation, and that there is nothing to hide in this regard. She further added that her objective is to uncover the truth and find out how the error occurred, and that as soon as the investigation results are received, they will be revealed and action will be taken against those responsible.
