The entire opposition has unanimously decided to present a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who holds the portfolio of Minister of Education and Higher Education. This decision was made yesterday (06th) at a meeting of opposition party leaders in Parliament, and the collection of signatures from relevant MPs is scheduled to begin today (07th).

The opposition accuses the Minister of acting arbitrarily and without understanding in carrying out duties in the education sector. In particular, the problematic situation that has arisen regarding the Grade 06 education system has been cited as the main reason for this no-confidence motion. The initial proposal that such action should be taken against the Minister of Education was presented at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentary group meeting held on the 5th, and it was subsequently confirmed at a party leaders' meeting chaired by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

According to Opposition Chief Organizer Gayantha Karunatilaka, other political parties in the opposition have also expressed their agreement to this proposal. Accordingly, the collection of signatures from MPs for the relevant documents is expected to be expedited starting today, and the opposition has made preparations to officially submit the no-confidence motion to the Speaker within this week.
