It is reported that the Provincial Council election is likely to be postponed until the end of this year. When inquired about this from the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyratne, he stated that an unexpected massive weather disaster occurred, which caused disruptions to the Provincial Council election proceedings.
Due to this, he also mentioned that the election would be delayed for some time. The government had initially decided to hold the Provincial Council election in the first few months of this year. The Minister stated that there are existing legal issues related to holding the Provincial Council election that need to be resolved, and the relevant amendments would be brought to Parliament soon. He further added that these amendments have already been included in the Parliament's order book.
Government sources stated that it is difficult to spend a large sum of money on the Provincial Council election at a time when a significant amount has to be spent on the weather disaster. The official term of all Provincial Councils has ended, and more than 11 years have passed. All those Provincial Councils are currently under the control of governors.
