Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva says that he has not yet received official notification regarding reports that Sanath Jayasuriya has decided to step down as the head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team after the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
This T20 World Cup tournament, considered the shortest format of cricket, is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 07 to March 08, 2026.
CEO Ashley de Silva further emphasizes that Sanath Jayasuriya has not yet submitted any official notification to Sri Lanka Cricket regarding his resignation from the coaching position.
The CEO, pointing out that his aspirations should be investigated, stated that Sanath Jayasuriya's contract is nevertheless scheduled to be reviewed after the World Cup tournament. He also emphasized that a firm decision on the matter can only be announced after the tournament concludes.
However, due to comments made by the former captain in an interview given to a local newspaper last weekend, there has been much discussion in the local cricket community that he has decided to step down from his current position with Sri Lanka Cricket.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva addressed the media last week, stating that the cricket governing body is satisfied with the current head coach's performance and his close relationship with the players.
During an informal meeting with the media, the President further stated that Sri Lanka Cricket expects to discuss Mr. Jayasuriya's future after the T20 World Cup. A strong hint was also given that the board is ready to continue working with the former prolific batsman even after the upcoming tournament.
Following the resignation of England's Chris Silverwood from the head coach position, 56-year-old Sanath Jayasuriya was initially appointed as the interim head coach for the white-ball series against India in July 2024. Subsequently, in October 2024, he permanently took over the current head coach position.
Under Mr. Jayasuriya's coaching, the Sri Lankan team has so far faced 60 matches across all formats. Of these, 29 matches have been won, and 29 have been lost. Two other matches ended without a result.
According to the latest ICC Men's team rankings, Sri Lanka currently holds the 6th position in Test rankings, 5th in ODI rankings, and 8th in T20 rankings.
