A 43-year-old mother of two has made a serious allegation that she was raped by a police officer in charge of a police station in the North Central Province at his official residence. Although a complaint regarding this crime has been lodged with the Child and Women's Bureau of the Police Headquarters, the woman revealed the details at a press conference on the 10th, stating that she has not yet received proper justice.
According to the victim, on November 28th, she went to the Ipalogama Police to file a complaint after a person damaged her small shop. Although the issue was resolved after investigating the complaint, the assailant returned and threatened her life. Due to this, when she went to the police station at night to file a second complaint, the officer in charge asked for her phone number and built trust by stating he was ready to offer any assistance.
Later, the officer in charge, who had called her on various occasions, informed her that he needed help that night and asked her to come to the official residence to cook for some people. Accordingly, he arrived in his car, dressed in uniform, around 9:35 PM, and took her to the official residence, where she states no one else was present. There, she tearfully stated at the press conference that the officer in charge locked the door of the official residence, threatened her by saying he would have his dog bite her, and then raped her against her will.
The victim states that she later learned that the officer in question had previously engaged in misconduct by obtaining photographs of another woman, and that complaints regarding this had even been received by the Human Rights Commission. She requests that legal action be taken against the officer who committed this crime, emphasizing that although the officers at Police Headquarters treated her very well when accepting the complaint, she is waiting for justice to be served.
When the media inquired about this incident from Senior Superintendent of Police Chandana Kandewatta, who is in charge of the Thambuththegama Division, he stated that a special investigation has already been launched by the Child and Women's Bureau of the Police Headquarters based on the woman's complaint.
