Two underworld criminals and a woman involved in a large-scale financial fraud, who were arrested in Dubai on international red warrants, were brought back to the country from Dubai on the 16th. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has confirmed that the woman brought back in this manner is the wife of a former Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
This woman, 56-year-old Nishamani de Silva, a resident of Ratmalana, Mount Lavinia, is accused of a financial fraud committed in 2014 while she was employed at a foreign embassy. Although the Colombo High Court had convicted her for defrauding approximately ten million rupees of government funds and sentenced her to imprisonment and a fine, she had been evading the law and hiding in Dubai for a long time.
Police sources state that when this suspect was apprehended by Dubai Police, her husband, a Chief Inspector, was also under suspension from service. He was suspended for leading the group involved in the shooting incident at the W 15 Hotel in Weligama, and during that period, his wife had been hiding abroad.
One of the underworld figures brought back to the country with her is 52-year-old Raveen Chaminda Weerasinghe alias 'Puncha', a resident of Kandana. He was a key suspect wanted in connection with the shooting incident in July last year involving Sameera, a secretary to former Minister Mangala Samaraweera. One person had died in that shooting, and the suspect has now been handed over to the Kelaniya Police Division for further investigations.
Police state that the other suspect, Kirialdeniyage Don Rasika Sanjeewa Kumara alias 'Uragaha Chooti Malli', is an individual who orchestrated organized crime centered around the Elpitiya and Uragasmandiya areas. The thirty-year-old is involved in numerous drug trafficking and extortion activities and has been handed over to the Elpitiya Police Division for further investigations.
