Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has sent a lawyer's letter of demand to YouTube channel operator Mr. Dharmasri Kariyawasam, seeking one billion rupees in compensation, alleging that false information was disseminated in a manner that damaged his reputation regarding the import of a controversial drug into the country.
This legal action was initiated on December 27th last year through the Minister's lawyer, Mr. Sampath Yalewatta, concerning the dissemination of false and defamatory information to the public, causing unnecessary unrest.
It is reported that these allegations against the Minister have been made through a video published by Mr. Dharmasri Kariyawasam on his YouTube channel, titled “The Hidden Story of the Indian Drug that Claimed Lives, Mayor Balthazar's Relative, and Minister Nalinda's Cover-up.” The Minister's lawyer has pointed out that a formal investigation is already underway regarding ten drugs, including the Ondansetron injection manufactured in India by Maan Pharmaceutical Ltd, and that the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has taken steps to suspend it due to reported complications from its use.
The letter of demand further alleges that the video attempted to create a false impression that the Minister is directly responsible for importing the drug, conspiring with its supplier, and covering up related issues, disregarding any of the aforementioned facts. Furthermore, the Minister's side states that the YouTube channel has also attempted to imply political patronage behind this incident by alleging connections between family members of Colombo Mayor Vrai Cali Balthazar and the directors of PTC Medical.
Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, through his lawyers, emphasizes that the dissemination of such false and defamatory content must cease immediately. The letter of demand clearly states that if this request is disregarded and false propaganda continues, legal action will be taken to recover the one billion rupees in compensation without any further notice.
