A police constable who served as a court police officer at the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court died in a motorcycle accident in the early hours of last (30th) day, according to Navagamuwa Police.
The accident occurred near Dudley Gunasekara Mawatha, Bomiriya, Kaduwela, when his motorcycle collided with a tipper truck. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital after sustaining serious wounds in the accident.
The deceased is 40-year-old Police Constable Aravinda Sandaruwan (No. 77855), a father of one. He was a resident of Moragala Road, Pilana, Wanchawala. The police further stated that Mr. Sandaruwan, who was attached to the Kaduwela Police, met with this accident while returning after dropping a friend home after completing his duty.
According to a senior officer at the Navagamuwa Police, the deceased Police Constable Aravinda Sandaruwan was an officer who had received a transfer to the Galle Police Division starting from January 01, 2026. He had served in the Colombo District for over 17 years.
After the accident, the injured officer was admitted to Navagamuwa Hospital by local residents and then transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment. He passed away in the early hours of the 30th while receiving treatment there. The post-mortem examination regarding the death was conducted by Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Dulanga Balalla. The driver of the tipper truck involved in the accident has been arrested by the Navagamuwa Police; he is a resident of the Polonnaruwa area. The suspect driver was scheduled to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court. Sergeants Nihal (No. 51887) and Rohitha Thalagala of the Navagamuwa Police conducted investigations into this incident.
