A police constable driver has been arrested after four years on charges of sexually harassing two female students studying at a girls' school in the Panadura area by ambushing them and exposing himself. The suspect, who is attached to the Police Supplies Division, was arrested by the Panadura South Headquarters Police.

The incident occurred on January 10, 2022, when the two students were on their way to school in the morning, and a person who arrived in a car committed the harassment and fled. In the initial investigations launched into this matter, it was identified through the license plates that the car used for the crime was a vehicle issued by the Sri Lanka Police to the accountant of the Kalutara Police Training College.

Based on that initial information, the police had taken steps to arrest the police constable who served as the regular driver of the said car on suspicion on the very days the incident occurred and present him to the court. However, continuous scientific investigations and examination of CCTV footage related to the incident revealed that the arrested driver was traveling on the Horana road on his personal motorcycle at the time the crime occurred.

Subsequently, an analysis of the mobile phone data of the suspect and his friend, the current suspect constable, confirmed that this second suspect was within the Panadura city limits at the time of the crime. After the police investigation notes were forwarded to the Attorney General through the Director Legal Division, instructions were received from the Attorney General to release the initially arrested officer from the case and arrest the actual suspect.

Acting on the Attorney General's instructions, the Panadura Police arrested the suspect police constable after he surrendered to the police. Further investigations are being conducted under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Nishantha Silva, in charge of the Panadura Division, and Chief Police Inspector Upul Priyankara of the Panadura South Headquarters.
