The Department of Inland Revenue has announced that several new tax amendments related to casino and betting businesses operating in Sri Lanka will come into effect today (January 01). These amendments have been made through the Betting and Gaming Tax (Amendment) Act No. 25 of 2025, and accordingly, this new tax policy will be enforced in the country.

According to these new amendments, the Casino Entrance Levy, which was previously USD 50, has been increased to USD 100. Accordingly, the Department of Inland Revenue states that if a Sri Lankan citizen enters a casino, the relevant business establishment must charge that person an entrance fee of USD 100, or an equivalent foreign currency, or the equivalent value in Sri Lankan Rupees.

Furthermore, a change has been made to the tax percentage payable to the government by institutions engaged in betting and gaming businesses. Accordingly, the tax rate, which was previously 15 percent, has now been increased to 18 percent. Authorities state that this new 18 percent tax rate will apply to betting agents and gaming businesses with a monthly Gross Collection exceeding one million rupees.

Since these new tax amendments come into effect today, the Department of Inland Revenue has instructed all casino owners and betting business establishments to operate in accordance with this new system.
