Cabinet approval has been granted to fill 26,095 existing vacancies in various ministries, departments, and institutions of the government, based on the recommendations of the official committee appointed to review the recruitment process and manage staff in the public service. The decision to appoint this committee, chaired by the Prime Minister's Secretary, was made at the Cabinet meeting held on December 30, 2024, and the committee has submitted these recommendations after identifying the necessities, priorities, and timelines of the public service.
Approval has thus been granted for the proposal submitted by the Hon. Prime Minister to authorize the relevant ministries and institutions to carry out these recruitments.The majority of the total approved vacancies, namely 23,344, are allocated for the recruitment of teachers for the Sri Lanka Teacher Service. In addition, 705 vacancies have been recommended for the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, 452 for the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, and 442 for the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education. 248 vacancies for the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation and 203 for the Central Provincial Council are also included in this approved list.
Furthermore, 167 vacancies have been approved under the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment, 166 for the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, and 102 for the Ministry of Defense. Recruitments are also planned for 76 vacancies for the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, 50 for the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic, and Marine Resources, and 37 for the Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure. Approval has also been granted to fill 33 vacancies for the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Cultural Affairs.
In addition, arrangements have been made to fill essential vacancies in ministries such as Science and Technology (23), Public Security (19), Agriculture (10), and Foreign Affairs (10). Approval has also been granted to fill 6 vacancies for the North Central Provincial Council, and one vacancy each for the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, as well as the National Police Commission. All these appointments are expected to be made expeditiously, subject to the committee's recommendations.
