Ms. Julie Chung, who served as the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, has posted a note via her 'X' (Twitter) account about a wonderful experience she had on the southern coast of this country before concluding her tenure and departing the island. She mentioned that although she is a Californian by birth, she had never engaged in surfing before.
However, she stated that thanks to a patient teacher she met in Sri Lanka, she was able to overcome her fear and get on a surfboard. She further mentioned that Sri Lanka's southern coast is very suitable for this, and that she hopes to return in the future, not as an ambassador but as a regular tourist, to improve her training.Following her statement, various comments were posted on social media, with many extending their good wishes to her. Some expressed gratitude, appreciating her contribution to the country's rebuilding process during one of Sri Lanka's most challenging times, while others referred to her as the "coolest" ambassador to have served in the country. Furthermore, a group including American citizens responded by stating that Sri Lanka is more suitable for an average person to engage in surfing compared to California.
It is noteworthy that Ms. Julie Chung's post received not only positive responses but also strong political and personal criticisms. One person warned that she might face legal action under the current political situation, while another disgustingly criticized her hope of returning, likening her to an 'incurable cancer'. Meanwhile, following Ms. Julie Chung's departure from the island, an acting official has been appointed to that vacancy, and a new ambassador is expected to be appointed soon.
