A group of MPs from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), led by SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa, is scheduled to undertake a private visit to the state of Odisha, India. The primary purpose of this visit is to participate in the Indian Republic Day celebrations on January 26, following an invitation received from a private university in India.
The delegation includes Members of Parliament Chitral Fernando, Chamindrani Kiriella, Chathura Galappaththi, and Prasad Siriwardana representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, while former MPs Indika Anuruddha, Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Sampath Athukorala, and Political Bureau member Milinda Rajapaksa are also reportedly set to join, representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
Another important aspect of the visit is that the delegation expects to undertake an observation tour of the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), recognized as one of the world's leading disaster management institutions. Additionally, they plan to visit ancient Buddhist archaeological sites dating back to the reign of Emperor Ashoka.
A preliminary discussion regarding this visit was held recently at the official residence of the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo. Political sources state that a very cordial meeting took place between the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Santosh Jha, and the Sri Lankan delegation.
