A gunman, who allegedly planned to assassinate the owner of a nightclub located in the Kompannaweediya area, and another person who assisted him, have been arrested by the Grandpass Police. Police have revealed that this gunman was previously arrested in connection with a fake shooting contract in Narahenpita, where he jumped in front of the vehicle of former National Lotteries Board Chairman Mr. Thusitha Haloluwa, causing a false commotion, and was later released on bail by the court.
At the time of their arrest, the suspects were found in possession of 25,650 milligrams of 'Ice' drug and two motorcycles with fake number plates, which were taken into police custody.This racket was uncovered when a team including Police Inspector Nishshanka Wijeratne, OIC of the Criminal Investigation Division of Grandpass Police, was on duty near the Victoria Bridge in Thotalanga and inspected a suspicious motorcycle. After observing that the motorcycle's number plates were fake, officers were able to find 12,450 milligrams of 'Ice' drug in the suspect's possession during the subsequent search.
Based on information revealed during police interrogations of the arrested gunman, the other individual, who was waiting under the Victoria Bridge preparing for another crime, was also apprehended. 13,200 milligrams of 'Ice' drug were found in the possession of the second suspect, and police state that the engine numbers of the motorcycle he arrived on had been completely erased.
The main suspect has confessed that on the 18th, they attempted to assassinate the said nightclub owner, but it was unsuccessful, and therefore, the firearm brought for the shooting was taken back by two unknown individuals who arrived on a motorcycle. It has been confirmed through the Department of Motor Traffic that the number plate affixed to the scooter-type motorcycle used by him belonged to a motorcycle registered in the Oraluwewa area of Kurunegala.
The arrested gunman in connection with this incident is a 31-year-old resident of the Uswetakeiyawa area, while the other suspect who assisted him is a resident of the Maradankadawala area. Grandpass Police are conducting further investigations into the incident and the motorcycles involved.
