The All Ceylon Canteen and Restaurant Owners' Association requests the Consumer Affairs Authority to set a controlled price for several types of short eats and rice packets. This proposal has been submitted with the aim of alleviating the burden currently faced by consumers due to high prices.
The association's president, Mr. Harshana Rukshan, stated that this proposal was handed over to Mrs. Samantha Karunatilake, the acting chairperson of the Consumer Affairs Authority, on the 16th. He further emphasized that his association is ready to provide full support for the implementation of the proposed price control.
According to Mr. Rukshan's proposal, the following controlled prices should be imposed for short eats: Rs. 80 for fish rolls, egg rolls, and chicken rotis; Rs. 70 for vegetable rotis; and Rs. 50 for a cutlet. Furthermore, the proposal requests that a plain hopper be sold for Rs. 20 and an egg hopper for Rs. 60, a vegetable rice packet for Rs. 220, a chicken rice packet for Rs. 350, and a fish rice packet for Rs. 300.
In addition, Mr. Rukshan points out that although prices in canteens operating within hospitals are determined by tender conditions, only hospital staff have access to food and beverages at lower prices. He further stated that his association has also submitted a proposal to the Consumer Affairs Authority to change this situation and provide an opportunity for the general public visiting hospitals to purchase food at concessionary prices.
Mr. Rukshan emphasized that the main objective of requesting these controlled prices is to free consumers from the injustice caused by canteen and restaurant owners who are already making excessive profits and severely burdening consumers.
