The number of deaths suspected to have occurred due to the consumption of illegal liquor (kasippu) in the Wennappuwa and Marawila areas has now increased to six. Preliminary investigations have revealed that these individuals faced sudden medical conditions after consuming some poisonous liquid.
According to reported information, three of the deceased individuals died after being admitted to Marawila Hospital, while the bodies of the other three were found in a house and a lodging in the Waikkal and Thambarawila areas. Police state that among those who died are individuals who worked at a local chili mill and a factory.
Those who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident are a group of individuals aged between 28 and 53, residents of Anuradhapura, Diyagama, and Waikkal areas. Information from residents indicates that several other individuals are in ill health and have been hospitalized.
Police officers who acted on the incident have arrested a woman in the Thambarawila area suspected of selling the illicit liquor. Wennappuwa and Marawila Police have jointly launched a comprehensive investigation into these deaths and the illegal liquor trade.
