
An Assistant Superintendent of Police and a female Police Sergeant were arrested yesterday (05) afternoon by officers of the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission on suspicion of bribery charges.
Those arrested are an Assistant Superintendent of Police serving at the Nuwara Eliya Assistant Superintendent of Police office and a female Police Sergeant attached to the Kalmunai Assistant Superintendent of Police office.
A senior official of the commission told the 'Lankadeepa' newspaper that these arrests were made after a raid conducted based on a complaint lodged by a police constable.
The Nuwara Eliya Assistant Superintendent of Police has been accused of accepting a bribe of Rs. 72,000 and a mobile phone, among other items, from an unmarried police constable serving at the Welawali Police, in exchange for obtaining permission and providing recommendations from the Batticaloa Superintendent of Police. The senior official further stated that he was arrested inside the Nuwara Eliya Assistant Superintendent of Police office.
Meanwhile, the female Police Sergeant, who is accused of accepting a mobile phone and other items as bribes from the same police constable, was also arrested on suspicion in connection with this incident.
Investigating officers of the commission are conducting further inquiries regarding the arrested Assistant Superintendent of Police and the female Police Sergeant.
