A Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter, engaged in relief operations for people affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions across the island, crashed in the Wennappuwa area, resulting in the death of its chief pilot. The accident occurred yesterday (30) afternoon near the Lunuwila Bridge in Wennappuwa, and the pilot who lost his life was Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya.

Preliminary information indicates that the Bell 212 helicopter, which was on a mission to distribute food supplies to flood-affected residents, experienced a technical malfunction and attempted an emergency landing. Senior military officials observed that when the pilot attempted to land the aircraft, he noticed a crowd gathered at the location. To prevent potential civilian casualties, the pilot then steered the aircraft towards a nearby body of water (Gin Oya).

At the time of the accident, the aircraft had a crew of five, including two pilots. Local residents and the police immediately worked together to rescue them and admit them to the hospital. However, the chief pilot, who was in critical condition, succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to Marawila Base Hospital, while the co-pilot and the other four officers are still receiving inpatient treatment.

Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya, who tragically lost his life, was a 41-year-old father of two. The Air Force confirms that he was a highly experienced and skilled pilot with over 3,000 flying hours.

Following instructions from Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, a special investigation board has been appointed to conduct a full inquiry into this accident, and further investigations are currently underway.
