The ban on pets in tourist hotels and restaurants in Abu Dhabi has been lifted, and new regulations allowing their entry have been published. Until now, foreign nationals visiting or residing in the country faced restrictions due to this prohibition.
According to these new amendments, establishments with tourism licenses are now able to accommodate "companion animals" such as cats and dogs. These amendments were made by the Department of Municipalities and Transport to Presidential Decision No. (4) of 2018, issued under Law No. (2) of 2012 concerning public health, safety, and animal control.Under the new guidelines, relevant establishments must designate specific areas for animals, prioritizing external areas such as terraces, balconies, and outdoor courtyards. Additionally, if health standards, animal welfare, and guest comfort can be ensured, animals are also permitted in indoor areas. Previously, the entry of animals into restaurants was largely prohibited, with exceptions only for certified service animals.
Fahad Ali Alshehhi, Acting Executive Director of the Municipal Services Operations Support Sector, stated that this step reflects Abu Dhabi's inclusivity policy while maintaining high hospitality standards. He further added that this decision will help to further solidify Abu Dhabi's international recognition as the most livable city in the Middle East and North Africa region. However, hotel and restaurant owners have been given the flexibility to decide whether to accept pets based on their facilities and customer needs. (Based on Gulf News)
