Allegation of supplying firearms to Makandure Madush: Former Minister Douglas Devananda arrested by CID

Former Minister Douglas Devananda was arrested today (26) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a special investigation being conducted by its Homicide Investigation Division.

This arrest was made in connection with an incident involving a pistol-type firearm found hidden in a wooded area near a culvert in the Weliweriya area in 2019. Investigating officers discovered this firearm based on information obtained during interrogations of organized criminal Makandure Madush.

It has been revealed that the firearm in question was legally issued by the Army in 2001 for the personal use of Mr. Douglas Devananda. After examining the serial number of this firearm, it was confirmed that it had been issued to Mr. Devananda.

The arrested Mr. Douglas Devananda is scheduled to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate's Court on December 27, 2025. The Homicide Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department is conducting further investigations into the incident.
