Kurunegala District Member of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara faced strong opposition from local residents when he visited the Kurunegala area to distribute relief to people affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions. This heated situation arose when the MP and his entourage brought relief supplies to a center housing displaced people, and a video clip showing him being booed and chased away is currently circulating on social media.
A large crowd gathered at the location was seen surrounding the MP and his accompanying group, expressing their strong opposition emotionally. It is reported that the public raised their voices against the attempt to video record the distribution of relief items. Local residents, stating that they are not beggars and were previously living well, accused the MP of trying to gain publicity or 'sell' their helplessness by videoing their plight, asserting that they would not allow it.
The public accused the aid distribution of being merely a show, emphasizing that the items in question had been previously provided by a media channel and that there was no need for politicians to distribute items given by other parties. They pointed out that ordinary people had come and provided them with relief over the past few days without any publicity, and that filming with cameras in such a situation was an insult to their dignity.
Responding to the strong opposition, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that the items were brought due to the need in the Kurunegala area. However, facing continuous public protest, the MP and his group were forced to leave the location, and as they departed, the gathered crowd was seen booing, expressing their disapproval.
