Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's media spokesperson, attorney Manoj Gamage, confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa moved into his residence in the Nugegoda area of Colombo last week.
Mr. Rajapaksa vacated the official government residence located at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07, on September 11th. This change of residence was due to the abolition of facilities, including housing, provided by the government to former presidents, following the passing of the Former Presidents' Entitlements (Amendment) Bill.
After vacating the Wijerama residence, the former president went directly to the Carlton House in Tangalle and stayed there for over three months. However, sources further report that he has returned to reside in Colombo, considering the ease of facilitating political activities and obtaining medical treatment.
The Mirihana area of Nugegoda is the decades-old residence of Rajapaksa family members Chamal Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and Mahinda Rajapaksa. Even when Mahinda Rajapaksa served as a library assistant at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, he commenced all his daily commutes from the Mirihana residence.
However, it is reported that with this new residence, his campaign activities in Tangalle will conclude, and access for external individuals to the Mirihana residence will be restricted.
