Regarding the controversial incident that occurred recently at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Girls' School, Colombo, where a student did not receive an expected award during the Colours Awarding Ceremony, the Ministry of Education has summoned the principal of the school for an inquiry.

According to a notification from Mr. Nalaka Kaluvava, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Principal Sumedha Jayaveera, who came to Isurupaya, clarified the procedure followed in awarding prizes for the years 2023 and 2024.

The principal stated that several specific decisions were taken into account when awarding the 'Most Outstanding Sportswoman' award, which a school sportswoman receives only once in her lifetime, at this ceremony organized after seven years.

Accordingly, she states that they worked to inform the nominated names for the relevant award in advance, considering several factors including achieving an all-island first place in a single event, setting an all-island record, and achieving a victory in an international competition.

The principal pointed out that the main award for the squash player involved in the issue was not given because she did not meet the necessary qualifications, not because she did not participate in the rehearsal. She also stated that even though she did not attend the rehearsal, a Colours award and a special award were presented to her. Furthermore, she informed the ministry officials that Nabhashi Perera, who won the award for the Most Outstanding Sportswoman, is a highly talented swimmer who has won many international competitions.

The squash player in question is currently an alumna of the school,

The principal accuses that her behavior, by interrupting the ceremony live, has damaged the school's reputation and set a wrong example for future generations. She further emphasized that the parents did not raise any issues when informed about this before the ceremony.

Commenting on this, Deputy Minister of Education Madhura Seneviratne stated that an initial inquiry was conducted with the principal, and she was ordered to submit a comprehensive report regarding the incident.
