Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa states that the attempt to punish individuals or media institutions that informed the public about the recent disaster situation in the country is not justifiable. He made this statement while answering questions raised by journalists.
Furthermore, Mr. Rajapaksa also commented on the reported incident where a National People's Power (NPP) Member of Parliament assaulted a police officer attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station. He pointed out that the relevant MP has not yet been arrested, and instead, attempts are being made to suppress media institutions that informed the public about this incident.
The MP also emphasized that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has no shame regarding the Police Media Spokesperson's announcement at a press conference that legal action would be taken against those media institutions.
Mr. Rajapaksa further stated that it appears the IGP and the Police Media Spokesperson are currently acting as media spokespersons for the government or the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
He further stated that the government is not taking this situation seriously and has turned it into a political joke. Mr. Rajapaksa emphasized that if a state official revealed certain information through the media after informing the ministry and the head of state, it is not fair to try to punish those who informed the country of that information without taking action on the matter itself. He also warned that threatening one media institution would affect other media institutions as well.
Mr. Rajapaksa recalled that there were reports of a National People's Power (NPP) Member of Parliament maintaining a cannabis cultivation, and that the said MP assaulted a police officer who went to raid the cultivation. He pointed out that the assaulted police officer has been transferred and imprisoned in connection with this incident, while the assaulting MP and the owner of the cannabis cultivation are still at large. However, he also accused the government of attempting to suppress media institutions that informed the public about this incident.
Mr. Rajapaksa regretfully stated that in a situation where organized criminals are constantly taking human lives, neither the IGP nor the Police Media Spokesperson has time to investigate such matters, nor do they intervene to protect the dignity of the Police Department. Instead, he severely criticized that the IGP and the Police Media Spokesperson have become media spokespersons for the government or the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
