During a case taken up for hearing at the Colombo courts the day before yesterday, a woman connected to the aviation industry leveled a serious accusation against famous cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, alleging that he fathered her child and is now evading paternity. While media reports initially identified her as an air hostess, confirmed reports have now established that she is, in fact, an airline pilot. Furthermore, a video clip of her dressed in her pilot’s uniform has already been released to social media and is currently circulating.
In the initial wave of criticism regarding this entanglement on social media, a significant amount of blame was directed toward air hostesses, with specific fault placed on her. However, observers analyzing the incident from different angles have since offered perspectives that do not view this as her fault.
This senior pilot has reported facts to the Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court, demanding that the cricketer either marry her or, alternatively, pay maintenance for their child. When this complaint was called before the court on the 21st, Colombo Additional Magistrate Mr. Kasun Kanchana Dasarathna ordered the case to be recalled on December 8th. On the day of the hearing, Mr. Chamika Karunaratne did not appear in court, and his lawyer informed the court that he was ill.
As stated by the plaintiff pilot, a close relationship developed between her and Mr. Chamika Karunaratne based on a promise of marriage, the result of which was the birth of their child. However, she states in her complaint that he is now avoiding both her and the child without entering into the engagement. Her primary request is that if he will not marry her, he must accept responsibility for the maintenance of the child.
While this event is being analyzed from various angles across social media, and although many are consuming it simply as entertaining gossip, the legal and humanitarian aspects involved are quite deep. It is significant that the woman facing this situation is a Senior First Officer who operates aircraft such as the A320 and A330. Her sister is also a pilot. In the video released to social media where she appears in her uniform, she advises the younger generation to believe in their dreams, work hard, and move forward with confidence, never letting anyone hold them back.
When looking at her role as a mother, her decision to bring the child into the world while facing complex hormonal and mental changes from the moment of conception has been appreciated by many. In a background where thousands of abortions take place daily, her decision to protect the child rather than destroy it, while maintaining her professional stability, is a courageous act. Here, she is requesting from the court not merely money or the status of being Chamika’s wife, but the legal paternity that her child is entitled to.
Some critics point out that a child carrying the transmitted genes of a talented player father and a pilot mother has a high probability of becoming talented in the future, and that providing paternal heritage to such a child is a father’s duty. When a child is born as a result of a physical relationship between a man and a woman, a man has no moral right to flee from that responsibility, and acknowledging paternity is considered a mark of respect to the child.
Since the pilot involved in this incident possesses a strong economic and family background, she has the ability to face this challenge. However, had an ordinary young woman without economic strength faced such a situation, her fate would likely have been completely different. Even though it transcends socio-cultural boundaries, her legal struggle to stand up for her child and provide them with a father can be considered a highly decisive event within the current social context.video click here
