Paternity Lawsuit Filed Against Chamika Karunaratne: Flight Attendant Demands Recognition for Her Child

 A flight attendant has filed a paternity lawsuit against famous Sri Lankan national cricketer and all-rounder, Chamika Karunaratne. The plaintiff has lodged a complaint before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake, requesting a DNA test to confirm the paternity of her child and demanding that the father’s name be included in the child's birth certificate.

When the case was called yesterday (21st), the Magistrate ordered the case to be recalled on December 8th. While the plaintiff (the flight attendant) appeared in court, the respondent, Chamika Karunaratne, was absent. His lawyer informed the court that Karunaratne was unable to attend due to illness.


In her complaint, the flight attendant states that she maintained a relationship with Chamika Karunaratne with the expectation of marriage. She alleges that as a result of this relationship, she now has a two-month-old child fathered by him.

She accuses Karunaratne of promising to marry her but failing to fulfill that promise, ultimately abandoning both her and the child.

The plaintiff is requesting a court order to subject the respondent to a DNA test to scientifically establish the child's paternity. Furthermore, she has requested that if Karunaratne refuses to marry her, an order be issued compelling him to pay a monthly maintenance fee of Rs. 100,000 for the child.

"I Expect Him to Fulfill His Duty as a Man"

Speaking to the media, the plaintiff voiced her frustrations regarding the cricketer's conduct.

    "Chamika Karunaratne is the father of this baby. Because he evaded his responsibilities, I have come to court to file a case requesting a test to confirm paternity. He did not come to the case today, claiming he is not well. I am not sure if he will appear before the court in the future either."

She further elaborated on her struggles, mentioning that Karunaratne had given her the runaround at the Women and Children's Bureau even during her pregnancy.

    "The baby is now two months old. This child needs to live in Sri Lanka. He says he cannot give his name. I filed for a DNA test because I know he is the father. I expect him to fulfill his responsibility as a man," she emphasized.


Although the plaintiff was present when the case was called, the suspect, Chamika Karunaratne, failed to appear. His legal counsel informed the court of his illness and assured the Magistrate that he would appear at the next hearing.

After considering the submissions made by the lawyers representing both the plaintiff and the respondent, Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake scheduled the case to be recalled on December 8th.

Chamika Karunaratne is a player with a history of controversial incidents outside the cricket field.

    The 2022 Nightclub Incident: During the 2022 Lanka Premier League (LPL) tournament, allegations arose that he assaulted a woman at a nightclub in Colombo, leading to his arrest.

    Consequences: As a result of this incident, he was banned from the LPL tournament and temporarily suspended from cricket.

    Aftermath: Karunaratne later publicly apologized and was permitted to re-enter the sport. However, the incident caused significant damage to his reputation and raised serious questions regarding his accountability and behavior off the field.

Karunaratne has also faced criticism for his outspoken nature and occasional conflicts with cricket authorities. He is known for expressing strong views on social media and in interviews, which have, at times, resulted in disciplinary actions or public backlash.


Having won international colors for Sri Lanka in 2021, Chamika Karunaratne quickly established himself as a talented all-rounder capable of contributing with both bat and ball. He has played decisive roles in several matches, displaying notable performances particularly in T20 and ODI cricket.

This legal case appears to be a serious crisis for Karunaratne, potentially impacting both his personal image and professional cricketing career. The result of the DNA test, which the court may order to establish paternity, will determine the future trajectory of this case.
