
The Homagama Police Division has taken steps to suspend a police constable who was assigned to security duties at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination coordination center established at Homagama Central College, due to an incident where he handed over his service firearm to a colleague and abandoned his duty.
The police constable who has been suspended is W.A.D.P. Wanigasuriya, bearing number 96819. This suspension was implemented by Assistant Superintendent of Police Saman Jayalath, who is in charge of the Homagama District.The officer in question had been assigned to security duties at this coordination center with another constable since the 8th of last month, and he was in possession of a T-56 type firearm and 30 live rounds. When the Homagama Headquarters Police Inspector visited to inspect the examination centers on the 19th, it was observed that the suspect constable had handed over his service firearm to the other officer and left the duty station.
Initial investigations conducted after this incident revealed that the constable in question has not reported back to duty and has not even gone to his home in Polonnaruwa. He is currently missing, and the Homagama Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
