It is reported that a landslide has occurred in the vicinity of the Kadirashan Culvert, which falls under the Haldummulla Police Division on the Badulla-Colombo main road.
Due to the prevailing rain, a large mound of earth along with massive boulders collapsed onto the Colombo-Badulla main road this evening (24) near Kadirashan Ella, close to Haldummulla town, completely blocking the road, stated Ms. K.A.G. Piyangika, the Divisional Secretary of Haldummulla.
Consequently, traffic on the road has been disrupted, and movement from the Haldummulla area has come to a complete standstill, the police stated.
The Divisional Secretary stated that the collapsed debris consisted of earth mounds and rocks that had rolled down from a very steep slope. She also mentioned that removing the debris from the road could be risky, and therefore, actions should be taken according to the recommendations of the National Building Research Organisation.
Currently, the police and local residents are jointly taking steps to remove the rocks and earth that have fallen onto the road.
However, at this moment, there is a reduction in rainfall in the area, but the police warn that further landslides could occur if rain resumes.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Secretary further stated that the Haldummulla-Soragune-Kirawanagama road, which leads to Beragala and is used as an alternative route to the Colombo-Badulla main road, has also been completely blocked by collapsed earth mounds.
