Steps have been taken to suspend a police sergeant who allegedly provided a luxury motor vehicle belonging to Palani Remotion, a powerful underworld gang leader and drug trafficker who has fled to India, for the personal use of a Sub-Inspector.

A sergeant attached to the Modara Police and serving in the Colombo North Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit has been suspended, with the Assistant Superintendent of Police (Colombo North 2) taking this action following a preliminary investigation.

Investigations into the said motor vehicle have revealed that the gunmen who shot and killed a person in the Kotahena area on the seventh of last month also arrived in this vehicle. Police have uncovered that an individual known by the alias 'Wala', a resident of Wattala Hendala area and considered a close associate of underworld leader Palani Remotion, had been using this vehicle, and that the sergeant had requested it from him on October 21st and provided it to the Sub-Inspector.

Investigations have confirmed that despite knowing that this vehicle was used for the Kotahena murder, the sergeant failed to inform his superior officers about it. Meanwhile, it is reported that the police have also launched a separate investigation into the Sub-Inspector who is accused of using this suspicious motor vehicle, belonging to an underworld leader, for his personal use.
