Eight individuals trapped in their homes due to the flood situation in the Pannala area were successfully rescued today, the 29th, using two helicopters belonging to the Indian Navy. This operation was launched as India further expands its aerial assistance in response to the emergency disaster situation in Sri Lanka.
With heavy rainfall causing water levels to rise, access roads to many houses in the Pannala area were blocked. It is reported that these helicopters flew over the area multiple times to rescue those affected. After transporting the rescued individuals to safe locations, steps have been taken to hand them over to local authorities for further action.
Authorities have confirmed that four Indian helicopters are currently deployed for rescue operations across the island, with two of these aircraft operating from the Indian Navy's ‘අයි.එන්.එස් වික්රාන්ත්’ (INS Vikrant) aircraft carrier.
These Indian aircraft are continuously working in conjunction with institutions including the Sri Lanka Air Force, Navy, Army, and Police for the evacuation of people in flood-affected districts, distribution of essential supplies, and provision of emergency relief services.
