Due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions across the island, authorities have decided to postpone all scheduled examinations, including the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, indefinitely, and also to postpone the reopening of schools.
Speaking at a special press conference held today (28) to inform about future activities amidst the current disaster situation, Sri Lanka Commissioner General of Examinations, Ms. Indika Liyanage, stated that all examinations scheduled to be held in the next few days have been thus postponed.
Accordingly, the Advanced Level Examination, which was scheduled to be held until December 05, and the General Information Technology Examination (GIT) for Grade 12 students, scheduled for December 06, have both been postponed indefinitely.
Furthermore, the Commissioner General of Examinations emphasized that recruitment examinations and efficiency bar examinations planned by the Department of Examinations for November 29 and 30 will also not be held.
She stated that this decision was made with serious consideration for the safety of students and staff, as well as the psychological stress they are experiencing, given that many schools serving as examination centers and roads across the island are obstructed due to floods and landslides.
Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, stated that there should be no doubt regarding the security of the Advanced Level question papers at the main coordination centers and the answer scripts collected so far, assuring that they remain extremely safe.
Furthermore, the evaluation work for the Advanced Level Examination, which had already commenced at 15 centers in 14 districts, has also been temporarily halted due to the adverse weather. Authorities indicate that an environment suitable for definitively announcing the dates for school reopening has not yet been established.
However, it was further stated that arrangements would be made to conduct these examinations as soon as normal life is restored, and the Department of Examinations would officially inform candidates of the revised schedules and dates in due course.
