Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Professor Padmalal M. Manage, has confirmed that six second and third-year students from the Faculty of Technology have been temporarily banned from attending classes following an assault incident involving a second-year student.
The incident occurred on April 29, when a group of approximately 25 students from the Faculty of Technology reportedly visited the private residence (boarding house) of the affected student, located in a suburban area, and assaulted the student using helmets and other items. The victim, who was allegedly part of a group opposing ragging (hazing), has identified the six senior students involved in the assault.
In response to the situation, the university’s disciplinary committee was convened, and the six students were summoned to the committee on May 1. Professor Manage clarified that, until the investigation is completed in accordance with legal procedures, the students involved would face a temporary ban from attending classes.
The assaulted student has also filed a complaint with the Homagama Police, who have since initiated a formal investigation into the matter. The university administration has requested the police to take necessary actions under civil law, and the authorities are reportedly taking steps to apprehend the students involved.
This incident has sparked widespread discussion within the university community. Experts in the education sector emphasize that such actions are crucial to prevent ragging and ensure a safe environment for all students. They also stress that the university must take strict measures to safeguard the security and well-being of its students, urging the authorities to take firm action in similar future occurrences.
This episode raises concerns about the persistence of ragging in universities, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance and stringent disciplinary actions to protect students from such harmful practices.
