The administration of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka has suspended 11 students in connection with the death of second-year student Charith Dilshan, who reportedly died by suicide following alleged ragging by seniors. This decision was made during ongoing investigations into the incident.
Four third-year students have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and were remanded until May 16 after being presented to the Balangoda Magistrate's Court. The university has stated that the suspended students will face disciplinary inquiries, and if found guilty, they may lose their university student status and degrees.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the persistent issue of ragging in Sri Lankan universities. Authorities have emphasised the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
