Pledges to Donate 99% of Gates Fortune
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates launched a scathing attack on Elon Musk, accusing the Tesla CEO of endangering the lives of the world’s poorest children following cuts to U.S. foreign aid. In a bold philanthropic move, Gates also announced he will give away nearly all his wealth within two decades and shutter the Gates Foundation by 2045.
In a candid interview with the Financial Times, Gates condemned recent funding cuts reportedly influenced by Musk to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which distributes critical health aid globally. He warned of a possible resurgence of deadly diseases like measles, polio, and HIV.
“The picture of the world's richest man killing the world's poorest children is not a pretty one,” Gates told the FT. “I'd love for him to go in and meet the children that have now been infected with HIV because he cut that money.”
The remarks mark one of Gates’ strongest rebukes yet against Musk, amid growing concerns over billionaire influence on global policy.
Gates, 69, also revealed plans to donate 99% of his wealth—estimated at over $120 billion—within the next 20 years. In a separate blog post, he wrote that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would cease operations by December 31, 2045.
“People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that ‘he died rich’ will not be one of them,” Gates wrote. “There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people.”
