United States President Donald Trump has personally called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after reports claimed that the online shopping giant planned to show customers how new import taxes (tariffs) would affect prices.
Amazon had considered showing these extra charges on a low-cost shopping website it owns called Amazon Haul, which competes with other cheap shopping platforms like Shein and Temu. However, Amazon later said that it will not go ahead with the idea, and that it was never planned for their main Amazon site.
The US government is facing pressure after raising tariffs on goods from many countries, especially China. Experts say these new taxes could make everyday items more expensive and may even lead to a recession.
Speaking to the media, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Amazon’s original plan “a political attack” and said this showed why Americans should buy products made in the USA.
“Why didn’t Amazon do this when inflation was so high under Biden?” she asked.
President Trump, who returned to office in January, has increased tariffs on many goods. Products from China now face taxes of up to 145%, which is likely to raise the price of common items like umbrellas and baby strollers, where China is a key supplier.
When asked about his call to Jeff Bezos, Trump said the billionaire “solved the problem quickly” and praised him as “a good guy.”
Although Bezos is no longer the CEO of Amazon, he still plays an influential role. In the past, he and Trump have had a rocky relationship, especially because Bezos owns the Washington Post, a newspaper that often criticised Trump during his first term.
This story has become a hot topic in the US as it highlights the tensions between politics, big business, and global trade, with possible effects on prices for people across the world, including Sri Lanka, where many products are imported from countries now facing US tariffs.
