Former Minister Viyalendran Remanded Due to Failure to Meet Bail Conditions

The former Minister, S. Viyalendran, who was suspected of assisting in a bribery case involving the acquisition of a bribe of Rs. 1.5 million from a businessman for issuing a sand mining permit, has been remanded to custody once again due to his failure to meet bail conditions.

According to court sources, although Colombo's Chief Magistrate, Ms. Tanuja Lakmali, had ordered the release of the former minister on bail today (8th), he was unable to fulfill the bail conditions, resulting in his re-remanding

The court had set bail conditions, which included a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and five personal sureties totaling Rs. 1 million, but the former minister failed to meet these conditions, leading to his return to remand.

Sources revealed that the difficulties in meeting the stringent bail conditions have resulted in the suspect being remanded once again. It appears that presenting the personal sureties worth Rs. 5 million has proven difficult for the suspect.

The case revolves around an allegation that the former minister assisted in receiving a bribe of Rs. 1.5 million for facilitating the issuance of a sand mining permit. He was arrested and remanded in connection with this charge.

Although the former minister was not directly involved in receiving the bribe, he has been charged with aiding and abetting the act. Investigations into the bribery and corruption charges are being conducted by the Bribery and Corruption Investigation Commission.

Following preliminary investigations and the gathering of acceptable evidence, the Commission arrested the former minister. Further proceedings in the case have been scheduled, and the suspect is expected to remain in remand until the necessary bail conditions are met.
