Chandrika’s Image Row Hits Attanagalla

The political stage at Attanagalla has taken a dramatic twist as former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has formally lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging the unauthorized use of her name and image during local election campaigns.

According to the complaint, Kumaratunga claims that her photographs and name were used without her consent in election promotional materials linked to the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha campaign. She asserts that this not only violates her personal rights but also breaches the country's election laws.

In a strongly worded appeal, the former president called for immediate action to halt what she described as "unauthorised political marketing" using her identity. “Using my image without permission is not just politically wrong, it’s morally wrong too," Kumaratunga was quoted as saying, speaking to several leading media outlets.

The Election Commission, taking the complaint seriously, has reportedly launched an investigation and plans to summon relevant parties for discussions in the coming days.

Under Sri Lankan election laws, using an individual's name or likeness for campaign purposes without their written approval is prohibited and classified as an election offense — a fact Kumaratunga's complaint has firmly highlighted.

This incident is particularly sensitive given Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s deep historical and political ties to the Attanagalla area — a stronghold long associated with the Bandaranaike family. Her father, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, and mother, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, were political giants, and Chandrika herself remains a respected figure in the region.

With campaigning heating up ahead of the local elections, rival parties and independent groups have already launched their promotional efforts. However, the unauthorized use of a former head of state's image has added an unexpected layer of controversy to the proceedings.

At present, the Election Commission is continuing its inquiries, and a public statement on the matter is expected soon.
