Big News from Space: Life beyond Earth

A distant planet, completely covered in ocean, shows signs that it could be home to living organisms. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers discovered chemicals in the planet’s atmosphere that, on Earth, are only made by living things.

This planet is in the “just right” zone for life — not too hot, not too cold — and has large amounts of methane and a rare gas called dimethyl sulfide, which on Earth is only made by marine life.

It’s not final proof of alien life, but it’s the most exciting discovery so far.
The Implications: Are We on the Verge of a Cosmic Revelation?
The implications of this discovery are profound. If confirmed, it could redefine humanity’s place in the cosmos and launch a new era in the search for life. But scientists remain cautious. There are still alternative, non-biological explanations for some of the signals — and the team is working to rule those out with further analysis and future observations.

“We are standing at the edge of one of the greatest scientific frontiers,” said Dr. Merrin. “This is no longer just about distant stars and planets. This is about finding neighbours in our galaxy.”

“We might not be alone.” More research is underway.
