Suspended IGP Joins the Ranks of Criminality

A Shocking Fall from Law to Lawlessness

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is actively seeking the arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with a shooting incident in front of a hotel in Weligama-Pelena. According to reliable sources, he is likely to surrender to court on Thursday, March 6.

Dodging Arrest & Eluding Justice

Tennakoon was initially expected to appear before the Matara Kotavila Magistrate’s Court on March 3, prompting media personnel to gather outside the courthouse from early morning. However, it is now believed that he will surrender through a motion on March 6, coinciding with the scheduled hearing of the Weligama police case.

Despite multiple raids on four of his known residences, CID investigators have failed to locate him. Reports suggest that Tennakoon may be planning to turn himself in through a court order rather than facing a direct arrest.

The Crime That Shocked the Nation

The incident in question took place in front of W15 Hotel in Weligama, where officers from the Weligama police opened fire, mistakenly identifying a group as underworld criminals. This reckless gunfire resulted in the death of a Colombo Crime Division sergeant and left a Police officer   seriously injured.

Following the shooting, CID launched a comprehensive investigation, now zeroing in on the former IGP’s involvement. His potential arrest has sparked immense public and internal police scrutiny.

A High-Stakes Investigation Unfolds

Legal experts emphasize the critical need for a transparent investigation given that an officer of Tennakoon’s stature is now accused of violating the very laws he once upheld.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court remains closely engaged in the case, meticulously documenting proceedings. CID’s investigation reports are expected to shed further light on Tennakoon’s role in the crime.

As the former IGP prepares to face justice, the case highlights a stunning betrayal of duty, with the legal system now poised to decide whether the highest-ranking enforcer of law has crossed into the realm of criminality.
