Sri Lanka Railways: 70 % Delays

Sri Lanka Railways, established in 1864, is a key transport service provider, connecting major population centers and tourist destinations across a 1,508 km railway network. Despite its vital role in public transportation, the railway system has faced increasing operational inefficiencies, particularly in maintaining train punctuality.

A recent National Audit Office report (2023) revealed alarming statistics: 70% of scheduled trains failed to operate on time. Out of 122,426 scheduled train runs, only 36,771 adhered to their timetable, while 10,531 trains were completely cancelled, severely disrupting passenger services.

Among the 113,759 planned passenger trains, just 36,053 ran on schedule, exposing a severe decline in service reliability. The audit further noted that frequent strikes, often triggered by issues deemed insufficient, contributed significantly to these disruptions, causing immense inconvenience to commuters.

Despite these findings, the Department of Railways has yet to officially respond to the report, raising concerns over accountability and the future of Sri Lanka’s railway service.
