Killing of an Innocent Dog in Wilpattu

Animal lovers are saddened, disappointed, and angered by the way a dog was used to lure a leopard out of the jungle. According to a video circulating on social media, a lone dog is seen walking along an unpaved road within the national park. The travelers in a vehicle are aware of what is about to happen, with one of them even saying, "Bye bye, doggy." Moments later, a leopard emerges from the jungle and pounces on the dog.

The vehicle, bearing the number plate 52-5633, is clearly visible in the footage, and some names of individuals involved are also mentioned. However, the authenticity of the video has not been verified.
Animal lovers are emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the wildlife authorities and the police to take prompt action. Activists highlight that animal cruelty laws could be enforced to take action against the perpetrators if they are found guilty.

Commenting on the incident, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody stated that while it is common for dogs from neighboring villages to stray into national parks, deliberately bringing a dog into the park to lure leopards for tourist attraction is a serious issue.

The Deputy Minister also mentioned that officials have been instructed to check all vehicles at park gates to ensure that no animals are being transported into the wildlife sanctuary with ulterior motives.
