Due to continuous losses, the proposal to sell liquor online was considered by the Excise Department.

The Excise Department has said that consumers' rumour was allowed to buy liquor through online supermarkets was untrue. Still, Excise Commissioner (Legal) Kapila Kumarasinghe today said that the proposal had been reconsidered.
He says that a proposal in this regard has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance.

He has said that the recommendations and observations have been submitted to the Ministry of Finance as requests have been received from various quarters to allow the purchase of liquor and that the approved cat could start the process.
Liquor stores have been closed islandwide since May 13.
The Excise Department says that the government has incurred a loss of over Rs. Fifteen billion due to the closure of liquor shops for nearly a month due to traffic restrictions, and the daily loss is over Rs. 500 million.
The new proposal is a way to make up for this loss.
However, there are rumours that this online system can be risky as it allows anyone to order alcohol and bring it anywhere they want, regardless of the age limit at which alcohol is allowed to be purchased.
