Ranjan into custody ... saying that he pressurised high court judges
Parliament member, Ranjan Ramanayaka who was taken into custody recently on charges that he kept an unlicensed weapon and bullets in his possession was once again taken into custody today (14) for the offense of creating undue influence on judges of the judiciary across telephone.
Member of parliament, Ranjan Ramanayaka was arrested by police at his home in Madiwela and was
taken to Colombo Criminal Division. After officers of attorney general's department and officers of Colombo criminal division informed Gangodawila magistrate, Mr. Wasantha Kumara he had pressurised duties of judges of the judiciary; the magistrate issued orders that suspect Mr. Ranjan Ramanayaka be taken into custody.
The charge against Mr. Ranjan Ramanayaka is influencing duties of judges of courts via telephone. When checking voice cuts pertaining to conversations with several judges of the judiciary he has made an undue influence on their duties, Colombo Criminal Division told in the presence of court. The Colombo Crime Division further told courts that Mr. Ranjan Ramanayaka is responsible for having created influence on judiciary activities which is an offense according to constitution 111 (c). According to provisions of the constitution, if any undue influence is made on duties of judiciary activities or judges ... a fine plus a one year jail term could be imposed by a high court.
In the above context, as stated in provisions of the constitution such a person is deprived as not suitable for voting, cast his vote in the case of a parliament election or presidential election or to hold any responsible job in the government. The attorney general has instructed the director of Colombo Criminal Division to take member of parliament, Mr. Ranjan Ramanayaka into custody and to secure a warrant to produce him before court.
At the moment when this arrest was made, Ranjan Ramanayaka appeared 'live' on facebook and joined in with the spectators with a smile on his face and said, "The team has come today also".
