Knife used to severe medical student's neck ... supposed to have been bought for Rs. 100 from Pettah!
Jaffna police headquarters say that the knife used in detaching the neck of the medical student of Jaffna university was bought by her soldier-husband from Pettah for Rs. 100 as was revealed from inquiries. When he had come home some days back on holiday, it was then that he had come to know that his wife has filed a legal case to ask for a divorce from him when he saw the summons issued to him. It is said that when finishing his holidays and was to go to report for duties at the army camp in Paranthan, on reaching Pettah from Beruwala that he had purchased this knife for Rs. 100 from a trader in Pettah.
The suspect who came to Paranthan on 22nd had gone close to Jaffna university medical faculty and had awaited her till she was to come out. When the wife came out, the suspect had accompanied her to the exercising strip of the Jaffna lagoon and had been walking, conversing with her. The suspect lance corporal has asked his wife, "shall we have an ice cream?" when she had refused to have ice cream and then the suspect has questioned his wife whether she has filed legal action in court to divorce him, police say.
A statement was secured from suspect lance corporal after interrogation and on that occasion all this information was revealed, a senior police officer said. On special instructions of superintendent of police and attorney at law, Mr. Nihal Talduwain charge of Jaffna electorate, the suspect was interrogated and a statement was secured by sub-inspector, Mr. Harsha Silva of crime section of Jaffna police headquarters and a team of leading police officers.
Police say that the medical student was killed as a result of an argument regarding a divorce case being filed going beyond bounds, police say. The suspect told police that he has suggested to his wife to live a good family life together without going in for a divorce. It is understood by police that when the suspect was getting ready to use the knife, the medical student has appealed in the presence of the husband pleading him not to kill her.
Roshani Kanchana who was subjected to murder was living aout 40 kilometres distance from the suspect's home. When questioning the suspect further, this information was revealed, police say. It was in the year 2017 that the couple had married with blessings of parents on both sides. It has come to be known that the suspect has told police that it was he who spent more for the wedding. The suspect has further mentioned that he came to know that his wife's mother was attempting to have her daughter get married to another, he had told police.
