A heart-rending incident was reported from Wennappuwa, Vaikkal yesterday where two children of a neighbouring house were murdered over an issue of water flowing from a land.

After realising that he would be at the losing end of the dispute, a person who lost his temper had entered a neighbouring house and as he could not find the parents inside the house he had gone to the extent of cutting and chopping two children there with a sword, it is reported. The suspect was someone who carried on a kiosk opposite Vaikkal Junior School. He has had an issue with residents
of the house concerned over a rain-gutter.

Police say that a clash had existed for quite some time between the two parties because of a problem where water flowing from the land of the suspect who has now been taken into custody flowing into neighbouring land. Though a complaint has been made to Wennappuwa police, since the issue was not settled, a complaint was next made to Wennappuwa provincial council. It was informed that both parties to be present at the office today (28) bringing a report from a technical officer in this connection and it was to a large extent to be decided in that instance that the unlawful kiosk be removed from that site.

Thus the owner of the kiosk has flown into a temper because a problem concerning his kiosk could surface at that moment. The suspect has then brought with him a sharp sword and after gaining access to the house under reference the father of the children had not been in the house while the mother had been upstairs. Thus when the children were in the front of the house, the suspect has proceeded to deal blows on them with the sword he brought with him.

The two injured children though admitted to Negombo hospital; but even by that time they had passed away, hospital sources say. The deceased in this instance is Galla Pathiranage Gimhari Nisali Rupasingha (19) who incidentally had this time appeared for the advanced level exam at Dankotuwa Balika Vidyalaya and G.P. Sahan Methsara Rupasingha (8) studying in grade two of Nainamadama Sebastian College.

This is what a neighbouring lady, one Mrs. Ranjani Perera spoke about the dual murder: "After hearing shouts about our daughter shouting, I came running to the road ... to see Nilmini nangi screaming 'Akke, Sujeewa putha has been cut!' So saying she took the child with her and darted towards the road. There was blood on the child's body. I with Nilmini nangi ran to the road and asked for help to stop a vehicle to send the child to hospital. Then Nilmini nangi told me 'Akke see amma ... inside the kitchen. I then once again rushed towards the house and then I noticed blood inside the house. Amma had collapsed in the kitchen. I made amma get on her feet and told the second daughter of Nilmini 'Take care of aachchi'. So saying I once again rushed to the road. Hearing the shouts, people in the village rocked there. In the process we heard somebody shouting 'Nangi also has fallen'. I then ran once again towards the house ... to see daughter also fallen alley near the house. Her neck was severed. I darted to the road shouting for help ... but no one turned up for assistance. Then an aunt of the child brought a car. I, that aunt and a few others got together and took her to hospital. The girl's mother was not aware that the daughter also was cut. What she thought at the hospital was that the daughter had fainted after seeing what had happened". The suspect was arrested by Wennappuwa police. Court proceedings are to take place.
