Flights and trains adjourned due to weather -- 10 houses caught in cyclone in Narahenpita

As a the prevailing inclement weather affecting the island, bus-travel, trains and flights have experienced difficulties. Railway authorities have informed that train travel on Kelani Valley main track would be delayed. Because of strong winds and rainfall that prevailed early last morning, trees have fallen across railway tracks because of which railway travel. Trees have fallen across between Meegoda and Godagama railway stations. As a result of strong winds and torrid showers this
morning (8) around Katunayaka International Airport resulting in inclement weather, 2 flights which arrived at Mattala airport were directed by airport authorities to Katunayaka Airport. There had been 155 of the airflight staff inclusive of passengers and instead of landing necessary fuel and meals were provided and the flight has set off in the dawn once again at 4.53 and the flight was made to land at 5.39 at Katunayaka airport safely. 

Due to heavy showers and strong winds, 25 houses in several areas in Matale district have sustained damage. Because of gusty winds, about 10 houses in Hathbodiya area in Narahenpita as well as 28 houses in Dambulla too have faced damage. On the other hand, meteorology department says that Western, Central, North West and Sabaragomuwa including Galle and Matara districts are prone to experience a heavy rainfall of over 100 millimetres. The department further sounds an alarm of warning about heavy showers and strong winds adding that wind speed on land and sea coast areas could increase as far as about 80 kilometres per hour.
