Kaluthara district crime unit after perusing CCTV data was able to apprehend a  husband - wife duo who had gone to a jewellery shop munching chewing-gum and then after wrapping a pair of ear-rings with the chewing-gum had gone away. 

It was a married couple aged 29 and 21 years of Pansala Road, Kaluthara North who were taken into custody for this offence. A few days before the said couple had visited a jewellery shop in Kaluthara
town with the intention of buying a pair of ear-rings and after spending close upon an hour there had set off having examined gold jewellery. An employee in the shop has checked and counted the quantity of ear-rings after the couple left and then had noticed that two pairs of ear-rings were missing. 
Subsequently when checking CCTV data it was revealed that a male who came that day had come chewing a chewing-gum and unknown to the workers there he had wrapped two pairs of ear-rings in the chewing-gum inside his mouth and immediately slip it into his mouth all movements of which were recorded on tape. 

According to a complaint made, inspector of police, Karunaratna together with a posse of policemen had carried out a survey for about four days after which it was possible to apprehend the husband and wife duo who were displayed on CCTV camera, police say. Police say that the two pairs of ear-rings were found pawned at two private pawn brokering shops. On interrogation of the suspect so arrested, it was revealed that he was someone who had a legal case pending in high court, a police officer said. The suspects are expected to be produced before Kaluthara court.
