Conference with 21000 Muslim Borahs begins in Colombo

It is the Sunni group who comprise the majority of the Sri Lankan Muslim community from among Sunni and Shiah groups when classified according to Muslims the world over. The Borah Muslim community considered as a sub-category of the Shiah Muslim group are found in about 40 countries. It is 'Ali' the son in law of whom they consider as the second of Allah. In the same way they have contradictory views about the religion. The Muslim Borah community conduct various
seminars on and off around the world and take part in social humanistic activities too.

The bomb blast in Sri Lanka by Muslim extremists was looked down upon by the Borah community. They have identified it as a degrading act of those professing their religion. Even in the instance of the Tsunami tragedy in Sri Lanka years ago this community had tried to provide help by getting together. Their thought is that they ought do something regarding the Easter tragedy.

Bombs went off at leading hotels. Tourists who patronised those hotels thus left the country in thousands and for a period of time made an  impact on the earnings of those hotels. As such, leaders of this community had thought of giving a new life to the tourist industry that collapsed. It is under this background that that the 'Seminar of Borahs' with participation of 21000 Borah Muslims would commence today (1) in Colombo. Arrangements have been made to launch the seminar at the venue of Borah Masjid main mosque down Werala Mawatha, Colombo 4 (Bambalapitiya).  Further, the seminar is expected to be held in large halls temporarily erected near the mosque down Marine Drive.

A seminar of this nature has previously been held in the year 2007 in Sri Lanka with participation of Borahs of 40 countries. About 7000 joined on that occasion. Because of the said seminar it was reported that the tourist industry which had collapsed for some months had regained life and that tourist hotels around Colombo and the environs had turned busy as a result. Members of this community have sought lodging even at de-luxe hotels where bomb blasts were reported and that too was at high rates. While prices of rooms of hotels had crept up while three-wheel drivers, tour-guides and kiosks and shops around Colombo had been busy unlike at other periods. Opinions have been expressed that because of the seminar a profit of close upon nine billion Sri Lankan rupees would be in favour of Sri Lanka. The seminar which begins today would continue throughout ten days.
