Three individuals including Muslim youth disguised as bhikkhu ... arrested in Polgahawela

Three persons donned in saffron robes but unable to produce any documents to prove their identity were taken into custody on suspicion when travelling in a train plying from Colombo to Anuradhapura. Those taken into custody are, Hinatiye Samitha (55), Dodamgoda Sumanarathana (31) of a vihara in Kandasurindugama, Kataragama and a tender 16 year old Muslim youngster named Mohammed Ishad disguised as a bhikkhu.

Kandasurindugama vihara was someone who was expelled from that vihara as a consequence of a conflict that flared up there while the suspect who appeared under the name Dodamgoda Sumanarathna was a person donned in a saffron robe but without any affiliation to any vihara as such. On the other hand, the said tender Muslim boy was someone who was without parents and having met the chief suspect bhikkhu in Colombo has had his head shaved from a salon in Colombo Fort and after being adorned with a saffron robe was being taken to Anuradhapura by train when accosted by police. 

On their suspicious behaviour, this information was unveiled at interrogation by Polgahawela police officer in charge. Police told court that this Muslim boy was unable to even converse properly in Sinhala. Police also told court that all three suspects have possessed no document to prove their bhikkhu identity or normal personal identity as such. Police also pointed out that it was revealed by some documents in possession of the main suspect that he holds several positions in non-governmental associations and that he had three latest, modern mobile phones, 14 American dollars, 400 Taiwan Yuan and Rs. 39,000 in Sri Lankan currency. 

Police informed court that it is necessary to question the three of them further because they displayed a suspicious behaviour particularly in an emergency environment prevailing in the country. Polgahawela magistrate, Mrs. G.N. Priyadarshani ordered that the three of them be remanded till next 28th.
