Bad examples all round the country ... after Matara student's rowdy behaviour
The incident where one schoolboy had to embrace death as a result of a case of stabbing over an issue linked to a romance between two groups of students of Matara recently was something that sent shockwaves over the country. Violent scenes of CCTV clips of the said assault is of course something that rocked both young and old alike.
Whatever it is, the negative outcome of that incident has by now begun to seep into society as trend, so to say. It was day before yesterday that an incident of a schoolboy of a private educational institute
in Bambalapitiya attacking another with a chair was reported. As a consequence of an argument which reached beyond bounds during a game of bowling played for money, a 19 year old schoolboy had been assaulted with a chair and had thus caused serious harm to him. The student of the said private educational institute has been remanded under orders of Colombo Additional Magistrate Mr. Isura Neththikumara yesterday (4).
The court stated that the two of them are still students and that if the other student had by chance sustained injuries to his spinal cord, it would be a damage beyond estimate and thus the suspect schoolboy was ordered to be remanded and the prison superintendent was cautioned to devote special attention on this boy as he was still a student. The assaulted schoolboy in this incident is presently under treatment at hospital. A medical examination is being carried out to determine whether any damage has been done to the spinal cord of that student.
In the meantime a similar incident has occured in yet another school in Uhana area. Uhana police informed that three students of grade 11 had come to school bringing sharp instruments hidden inside their schoolbags and they were taken in for questioning some days back. The three students have admitted that they had brought these sharp instruments with the motive of attacking three students in grade three.
They had in fact prepared these weapons after dismantling chains of a mechanical saw they had discarded. On information received by the principal of the school that three other students had come to attack a group of students, had got together with some members of the staff and on checking their bags, these weapons were found. After the principal notified police, the police officer in charge had summoned their parents and this complaint was inquired into in his presence. At the request of these parents these students who were to sit for this year O.L. examination were warned severely with the knowledge of the principal and were released on police bail.
